My Landlord Is A Monster

Help for Renters and Tenant's Rights

Do Not Do Anything Illegal If You Have A Terrible Landlord

August 22, 2019 by Jason Clements

If your landlord is a monster, do not do anything illegal. Do not destroy the property or break things. Thinking about punching your landlord and breaking his jaw – no, do not do it. A flaming bag of dog poop on the landlord’s front porch – not that one either.

Do not do anything illegal to your terrible landlord or your terrible landlord’s property. Take a deep breath. You will be okay. I will teach you how to get through this.

Coming soon: All of the how-to’s

  • Know when to tolerate bad landlording
  • I will teach you to know when and how to leave a bad rental
  • I will help you know how to become the best renter you can be and hold your landlord accountable for doing ALL that he is supposed to do.

I Had THE WORST Landlords in the World

My Landlords Were Monsters

I do not think there are many worse people on planet Earth than the landlords I rented from in Shawnee, Kansas.

If you look up “terrible human beings” in the dictionary, it is their picture:

They were truly monsters.

You know how people say, “I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.” Well, this is the only time in my life where I DO WISH all the worst things that can befall a human being will happen to these monsters…like cancer, other devastating long-term sickness, accidents, pain and suffering, financial ruin and worse (if there can be worse).

Do Not Do Anything Illegal

I had all the reasons in the world to pay these monster back in kind; but common sense prevailed and I did not do anything illegal.

The landlord would walk up to my young daughter and level his groin to her face, I did not punch him.

When I handed the landlord cash for rent, and then he said I did not pay rent, I did not do anything illegal.

Even after my daughter was injured from their negligence, I did not do anything illegal.

I will to talk about how I (me, Jason) take full responsibility for tolerating this rental / business relationship, and not being smart enough to move. It was one of my life’s greatest mistakes: I lived in this house for 9 years and paid this monster $100,000.00.

Renting Horror Story: No air conditioning for 10 days in the 100 degree summertime.

Jason Clement is my name. I have rented for 27 years. I lived in 7 apartments, 3 houses, lived with the in-laws and lived with my parents. I have had excellent landlords and landlords who were monsters.

My Landlord is a Monster is written to help you become a better renter, call your rental “home sweet home”, and keep your landlord accountable.

And this photo below is for all of you terrible landlords out there:

Kansas Renters Help Tools For Those In An Emergency Situation

August 2, 2019 by Jason Clements

REMINDER:  The first rule of renting is “Always Be Looking.”

If you are here because you are in an emergency situation:

  • Your landlord is abusive (verbally or physically)
  • Your landlord is lazy
  • Your landlord is miserly
  • Your landlord is creepy
  • Your landlord is a monster
  • Your landlord weirdly presses his genital area toward your children’s faces
  • Your landlord doesn’t listen to maintenance requests

You must read and PRINT this document off.

This is the Kansas Tenants Handbook link here http://www.kansaslegalservices.org/files/THB.pdf

This is one of those times where you want to PRINT this document.  It is 41 pages long.  When you print it off, you’ll be able to make notes; highlight sections that are very important to you.  And if you  happen to have a landlord who is a monster (but will still listen to you) you can take this LEGAL advice to your next meeting with him to discuss your complaints and concerns.

You deserve to get what you pay RENT for and more.  You deserve a landlord who understand the even exchange of RENT dollars for a place that you might call HOME.

Here is the link to Kansas Legal Services.  http://www.kansaslegalservices.org/

From their website:

“We are a statewide non-profit corporation. We are dedicated to helping low income Kansans meet their basic needs through providing essential legal and mediation services.”

Calling Kansas Legal Services is a project.  You have to go over an interview process to find out if you qualify.  Yes, they will ask you for all of your personal data including employment status, financial information, tax information, and a host of other questions.  Remember that this service is for low and moderate-income Kansans.

The Last Straw: A Renter’s Nightmare in Shawnee Kansas

August 1, 2019 by Jason Clements

My Landlord is a Monster
This is my daughter’s foot about 48 hours after the injury.

The last straw: A Renter’s Nightmare in Shawnee Kansas

My daughter was injured by the negligence of a landlord.

I heard my 15-year-old daughter’s faint quivering voice, “…help..help me.”

Then I heard her exhale that sigh of pain and injury…that staccato breathing. That agony–she was in deep pain.

As I ran through the house, I saw her crawling though the front door, dragging her foot behind her, leaving a trail of blood through the threshold of the door and onto the wood floor of the front room.

I felt that burst of adrenaline that every parent feels when they know their child is injured. I usually am fairly cool during a first-aid emergency; but that was about to be different.

Her foot was a bloody mess. There were deep, nasty gashes on the top of her foot. She was rolling in pain. It was hard to keep her still and I cleaned it up and applied pressure with towels to stop the bleeding.

I ran back to the kitchen and grabbed an ice pack. Ran back to her and pressed that ice pack down on top of her foot. Blood was everywhere.

With my other hand I was patting her back, helping her to calm down. I was breathing deep breaths with her. We were going to be okay.

After about 10 minutes, she was calming down. I was calming down. We moved the towels away to look at her foot. There were many small scratches, a few deeper gouges, and one very deep gash on the top of the foot just below her big toe.

It stopped bleeding; but is looked nasty and scary.

Now, I had to decide whether or not to take her to the emergency room or quick care just a few blocks away. I am not the go-to-the-emergency-room-right-away kind of a guy. Also, at the time, I was dead broke. The thought of a hospital bill added to my nausea.

…and then that anger started rising.

Quickly and heavily.

The landlords…damn them to hell.

My landlord is a monster.  They are negligent monsters.  Damn them to hell.

What I did next:

  • I called my city codes office
  • I called my insurance
  • I called attorneys.
